Steely Dan’s album Aja was released almost 50 years ago. Whatever one thinks about this music today, it remains that Aja was seismic within in my own circle of music-loving friends at the time.
The production was pristine by the audiophile’s standards, and the instrumental performances turned in by Donald Fagen’s and Walter Becker’s army of session musicians uniformly brilliant. However, I’m fairly certain we had no clue as to what the lyrics were trying to convey, even if these three lines seemed to mirror my own struggles with conformity.
